Your Liposuction Recovery - Smart Ways to Prepare & What You Should Expect

The recovery from your liposuction is a process you should understand before going forward with the procedure. It's important you know what to expect and how to prepare so you are ready for your surgery.

Your plastic surgeon will give you their recommendations on how quickly you should return to your daily life, including work. These will be based on your particular case and your overall health.

Immediately after your liposuction you'll probably feel a little disoriented. Because of that you must arrange for a ride home from a friend or family member. You should also have someone who can be around for the first 24 hours to help you get around if needed. You may not need much help, but it's best to have them there just in case.

You should also arrange by your bedside ahead of time all of your medications as well as something to drink within easy reach. Liquids are essential during recovery.

POSSIBLE PAIN AFTER LIPOSUCTION SURGERY

The day after the procedure is when some pain is most likely to be experienced, if at all. This will not be a major problem, but could require some pain medication.

The day after is also a time when it can be beneficial to start doing some walking for short periods around your home. This has been found to help your circulation, reduce any pain and aid your overall recovery. You should not keep walking, though, if it becomes uncomfortable or if you are tired.

YOUR RETURN TO DAILY LIFE AFTER LIPOSUCTION SURGERY

Generally, most patients can expect to be able to move normally and possibly even return to work within a week or less after surgery. There may still be some discomfort during this time. After about 2 weeks, most will feel a complete return to normalcy and you will start to see the results of your liposuction appear. These results will evolve and emerge over time, rather than all at once.

Despite your ability to move normally once again, your stamina may not be at the same level as before. You will get it back, but it might take a few weeks before it rises to its old levels consistently. In the meantime there could be ups and downs in your energy levels. This is not unusual.

You could have some swelling, bruising and/or numbness during the initial recovery time. These will all start to go down quickly, though the swelling will be slowest to do so. It will inevitably go down completely and, even with that initial swelling, you'll probably be smaller than before.

The return to work and some normal activities is a good step forward, but some limits are needed. Do no do any active exercising for at least the first week. It's crucial that you give your body the time it needs to adjust and recuperate.

Your plastic surgeon will be the final authority on what you should do during your time after your liposuction surgery. Follow their directions and ask any questions about what is appropriate for you during those first weeks. That is the best path to a safe and successful liposuction.

How Can I Ensure a Safe and Timely Recovery From My Liposuction?

Liposuction is an ever-increasingly popular surgical technique. Because of improvements in technology, liposuction is becoming safer and less-invasive than ever. The field of Laser-assisted liposuction is growing especially rapidly, with a number of different companies developing different lasers for the surgery, such as SmartLipo, ProLipo, CoolLipo, LipoLite, and LipoTherme. However, liposuction is still a major surgical procedure; a liposuction can remove up to 10 pounds of body fat. That loss, in addition to blood and fluid loss and general trauma, makes it takes some time and effort for the body to recover after surgery.

However, there are certain things that a patient can do to speed his or her recovery. This article will address the things to do and the things to avoid in order to recover most quickly, fully, healthily and beautifully.

The first and most obvious rule is to obey your doctor's orders. This will solve the majority of complications you could run into. Keep your follow-up appointments with your doctor, and keep your doctor apprised as to your healing process. Tell your doctor about your swelling, bruising and any other side effects you might have; he or she will be able to determine whether or not they are indicative of anything serious. If you experience fever after the first 48 hours after surgery, excessive pain or notice that your drainage smells foul, be sure to alert your doctor.

During the first day or two, you might experience some dizziness or fainting. Be cautious as you move about, and especially as you get up. Falling over won't help your recovery process. Also, if you get faint at the sight of blood, realize that you should be cautious while changing your bandages, as they will be blood-tinged.

Wear the compression garments according to your doctor's orders. These will both help you to heal and will improve the cosmetic results of your surgery.

During the first few days, get adequate rest. Let your body heal. Once several days have passed, ease back into exercise. Don't push yourself, though. Go at your own pace and you will heal with fewer hiccups. However, don't simply pass on exercise either; mild exercise can help you avoid blood clots and other potential complications.

Eat a healthy diet. Make sure you drink enough water or juice to keep yourself hydrated; you may have lost fluids during surgery without knowing it.

Shower, rather than bathe, and shower once or twice a day. Keeping the incision sites clean will help you to avoid infection. When you wash your incisions, make sure you wash your hands first.

If you have been prescribed antibiotics, make sure you take them until you have finished your prescription. Do not stop early, even if you feel totally fine.

If you experience itching, you can use Benadryl. For pain, use Tylenol. Avoid NSAIDS like ibuprofen, because these can cause increased bleeding and increase the chances of infection.

While you recover, do not use ice packs or heating pads in the areas where you have received liposuction. Do not go swimming or bathing for at least seven days after your surgery. The bacteria present in pools, hot tubs, lakes, ponds and oceans can increase the chances of infection.

Do not use hydrogen peroxide or other topical antibiotics on your incision sites. Use the absorbent wrappings or bandages given by your doctor; do not replace with plastic bandages like band-aids.

Obviously a short list like this cannot include everything that will aid in your recovery. If you are thinking about getting a liposuction, consider meeting with a doctor in your area. Many surgeons offer free consultations to potential clients. Your surgeon can answer any questions you have about recovering from liposuction.

The Recovery After Laser Liposuction

While some plastic surgery procedures require a long list of post-op instructions, SmartLipo's recovery process is much simpler. The heat from the laser's energy results in significantly reduced side effects and lessens the risk of complications after surgery. The laser used in SmartLipo seals the open blood vessels and lymphatic channels as it goes through the fat and melts it. This reduces blood loss and lymphatic leaking during the procedure as well as the magnitude of bruising and swelling after.

As soon as the Smartlipo procedure is over, the body will begin healing itself. Regardless of being done under general or local anesthesia, patients can leave the facility where the procedure was performed as the anesthetic wears off. Patients will go home with compression garments applied. This could be a wrap-around abdominal binder, a compression girdle, ace wraps on the arms, or a neck strap, depending upon the area treated. These compression garments have no magical properties and are not singularly responsible for the cosmetic outcome. But they do help with pain and comfort as they hold the area tight and prevent the areas treated from moving around excessively...and painfully. The very small incisions where the laser probe and cannulas were introduced will drain a little and that is perfectly OK. Sometimes these will be left open so that drainage can occur. This drainage will usually stop in a day or so. There is no care required of these small incisions. (i.e., no need for antibiotic creams)

With traditional liposuction, the recovery period can be weeks or even months. Extensive swelling and bruising was normal and the pain was significant. With Smartlipo, the recovery is definitely quicker with less pain. Many patients can resume their regular work and social activities within the first few days. Smartlipo still does have some swelling but with less pain, activities and exercise can resume sooner which increases circulation to the treated areas. As circulation is increased with greater postoperative activities, the swelling that does develop will go away quicker.

As Smartlipo is often done with other cosmetic face and body procedures, the amount of recovery will be extended as the operation and trauma to the body increases. But when done as a stand alone procedure, Smartlipo offers some real recovery advantages over traditional liposuction.

Smartlipo - Your Expected Recovery Time

The first question that many people who may want to go for smartlipo surgery is "what is my recovery time like?" The second thing that comes to mind is what the nature of the surgery will be like and the results. Well, I will exactly ask same questions, what about you?

Smatlipo is approved by FDA and is a laser-assisted liposuction procedure. This procedure has proved a perfect solution to people with excessive fat deposits. Many people have resulted to this and their testimonies are not bad so far.

Smartlipo is effective in removing fats from all parts of the body including the rather hard-top-reach areas that pose untold difficulty with liposuction. With smartlipo, fat deposits can be effectively removed from the abdomen, face, neck, back, chin, hips, knees, and buttocks. It is also used in handling other fat issues like saddle bags, love handles and many more.

Unlike the liposuction, smartlipo requires only local anesthesia. This means fewer risks and complications. The worst you can witness with smartlipo are minor swelling, bruising and numbness. These however, occur within a short period of time without other affects or severe side effects. In most cases, depending on the surgery procedure used, you may be required to wear a support garment or clothing for several days after the surgery.

Ordinarily, recovery from liposuction takes weeks or even months. But with smartlipo you can usually go home after your procedure on the same day. It has lesser recovery time and you will be back in your normal daily routine or profession within a few days of the surgery. Surprisingly, the surgeon will advice you for a day or two of rest after the surgery then you can fall back in line with your work.

However, the recovery period may be dependent on the amount of fat removed. To improve your status and health, stay away from strenuous sports for at least a week or two., whatever your doctor directs you to do. If you are scheduled for recovery check-ups honor them. The monitoring eyes of a professional will help you in receiving best body contouring results.
