Every once in a while a new technology comes along that "disrupts" our current ways of thinking. Remember when cell phones were just a novelty? And now we can't seem to do without them.
The field of liposuction has has many recent new developments based upon advances in technology such as Vaser, ultrasonic assisted liposuction, Slim Lipo and Smart Lipo laser assisted liposuction, PAL power assisted liposuction and others, but the one that is causing a "revolution" in the way we do liposuction simply uses water pressure to accomplish the job. Think of it as a power wash for your fatty tissue.
WAL or water assisted liposuction was introduced in Germany about five years ago and in December in the United States. This machine uses a gentle spray of dilute anesthetic solution to help dislodge fatty tissue in preparation for liposuction of the area. The liposuction is performed at the same time as the anesthesia is delivered and therefore there is less likelihood for lidocaine absorption or toxicity. In addition, the contours of the area can be more readily appreciated because the fluid has been extracted and more precise results can be ascertained. The fat can also be saved in a specialized container for reinjection of the buttocks, breasts or facial areas. The salvaged fat is the ideal filler and can be permanent.
The result is more accurate extraction of fat, less post operative bruising and discomfort, and much less downtime than with traditional methods of liposuction. If there is skin laxity then Slim Lipo or Smart Lipo laser induced methods can be used as an adjunct to help tighten the skin.
